From the Maverick Chili Society Intentional
May 2, 1991
The Ladies Texas State Chili Championship will make its 21st annual appearance at its birthplace in Luckenbach on the traditional first weekend of October (Saturday the 5th). With the history of Frank X. Tolbert at hand and the humor of Hondo Crouch at heart, you are invited to be a part of a highly-disorganized chili team to make its (tentative) debut appearance at this hallowed cook-off.
Unless someone can come up with a better name for this undertaking, it will be known as Rangerette Bobbette and the Maverettes. It will be composed of a dainty dozen or so girly-men in drag with shaving optional. It is a well-known fact (especially among males) that men are far superior to women when it comes to cooking chili, so it would not be fair to actually enter the cook-off. With this letter, the seeds of imagineering are sown. Let us impress each other with the fertilizer we have between our ears in which these seeds might grow.
See y'all out and about the chili trails where this idea may be nursed and cursed with all the distinction it merits.

____________________ A Note From Ranger Bob Photos taken at Luckenbach in 1991 inspired the idea of a calendar and so it was that the first calendar appeared in 1992 using imagery captured in 1991. Looking back, the computer technology taken for granted now was not so affordable (flatbed scanners $1,000 & laser printers more), if even available at the time (no digital cameras) . . . early calendar productions were not an easy undertaking . . . courtesy mostly of people with corporate connections to publishing wherewithal.
There were seven calendar printings from 1992 through 1998. The 1998 photos taken never made it into a calendar for lack of interest. Tolbert had adopted "if you win you're in" Maverick sanctioning contributing the the decline of the Maverick Chili Society Intentional.
I do still have a very few calendars including at least a couple of each year. ___________________________ _Girly Men of 1991
